Wild, an immersive experience.

"Wild" is a student/passion project that delves into the enthralling relationship between California's native wildflowers and the annual wildfires that engulf the region. Inspired by the resilient resurgence of life from the ashes, this immersive book acts as a field guide, weaving tales of five remarkable flowers and their origin stories.

This project offers a truly immersive experience, inviting readers to venture deeper into the world of Pyrophytes. Each page boasts botanical illustrations that bloom with the touch of sunlight. Using spot varnish infused with UV-reactive pigment, these illustrations undergo a mesmerizing transformation, shifting from transparent to vibrant hues found in nature. "Wild" is an ode to the indomitable spirit of nature, an artistic exploration that transcends boundaries.

Though a student project, I think it best exemplifies my way of thinking with regard to design. In my undergraduate experimental publication design course, we were given a sandbox opportunity to create whatever we wanted, so long as it could be considered a publication by traditional(-ish) standards. If we could think of it, for the most part, we were encouraged to pursue it. With this project, I intended to capture a naturally occurring phenomenon and embed it in a publication, with the goal of being able to translate that experience to someone else. Over the course of ten weeks, I spent all of my time exploring the intimate relationship between California wildflowers, and California wildfires. I also, despite no prior training in bookbinding or packaging design, taught myself both in order to create an experiential kit. I drew every illustration seen in the work by hand as well.
